Beskrivning

Helen Phillips is the owner of the ’Clicker Gundog’ Training Centre. She is a qualified teacher. With her husband she manages a small shoot at the training centre solely for training purposes. For the last 5 years Helen has also managed a small syndicate shoot in Worcestershire with her husband and on the shoot was responsible for the organisation and running of the team of beaters. She has been shooting and working dogs in the field for over thirty years and has been breeding Hungarian Vizslas since 1998 and as a result has an extensive understanding of living with and working with hunting dogs. Owning a variety of breeds from crosses, to Spaniels and HPRs. The dogs have accompanied her on a range of different types of shoots from large commercial events to a pleasant day rough shooting. Now the focus is on working on the small shoot she manages and providing and working hunting dogs for Retriever training on the shoot. She currently has two Hungarian Vizslas Jack aged 6 and Scout aged 5 years and a young Springer Spaniel, Wren aged 2. All the dogs work in a variety of roles on the shoot from beating, picking up to partner on the peg.

During the last ten years she has taught a Canine Training and Behaviour Course at Warwickshire College, just outside the Cotswolds and WAS a business partner with Learning About Dogs in Gloucestershire. Helen has a Distinction in the certificate in Canine Training and Behaviour from Warwickshire College and has taught the same course at two levels for 6 years. She also has the City and Guilds level 5 Teaching qualification. She has obtained the Learning About Dogs Clicker Trainers Competency Assessment Programme levels 1, 2 and 3 with Distinction and is an active assessor for the scheme. Alongside this she trained with Kay Laurence for many years and taught a variety of Clicker Training workshops at Wagmore Barn in Gloucestershire.

She now also teaches a variety of Clicker Training and Gundog courses around the world as well as at her own training facility in the UK. Her focus is on promoting the use of positive reinforcement training techniques and strategies within Gundog training and field sports in general. She has a strong ethical stance in respect of this and endeavours to promote this within the shooting field. She is currently an Instructor and Assessor for The Gundog Club and runs courses each year for all levels.

Helen is the Author of the popular ‘Clicker Gundog’ Training Book. Good fieldwork is built on an understanding of the dog’s ability to maintain control and the handler’s ability to understand this and the environment. With Clicker Gundog the focus is on learning how to develop this partnership using reinforcement strategies in depth. Learn how to use careful planning so that you build a high level of control that exceeds the stimuli of the hunt and shoot. Over the last ten years through Clicker Gundog she has developed a range of workshops and seminars to help teach these skills to both the handler and the dog. The seminars and workshops are held at a training facility that has been developed especially for the purpose and incorporates a working shoot so that both dogs and handlers new to the sport can experience what a shoot is all about, and those with experience can then practice their skill in the working environment.

In 2018 Helen launched The Gundog Trainers Academy Ltd., in partnership with Jules Morgan. This is an organisation with a mission to support, nurture and encourage high standards of ethical, science based, non-coercive and effective methods of training for gundogs in the UK. It offers a comprehensive educational programme for gundog enthusiasts to learn to become Gundog trainers from all backgrounds of dog training.
